Auto Parts: 2002 Windstar pcm errors, powertrain control module, pep boys

Question
When I turn on the van, the message says: "Check Comp". When I push the info button, I get: "fuel data error". When driving at least 3 warning lights come on: Traction Control, ABS, Brake.

With so many faults coming from all over the place, would you agree is the main PCM?  This all happened at once..

ALSO, the mesage window became very dim and I smelled something like a computer chip melting down...

I called Ford and they want to charge me $105 per module to diagnose.

HELP and thanks in advance.

Robert

Answer
Hi Robert,

Unfortuntely, testing the modules is an involved process. What you should start with is the battery. Disconnect it for at least fifteen minutes to reset the ECM and delete any DTC's that are stored. reconnect the battery and start the engine. Drive it around the block if needed to activate the BCM codes.

OK, the Powertrain Control Module has no bearing on the lights you are getting. The first code your getting might be because of a faulty connector but the other three warnings are all related. T/C, ABS and Brake are all related components which means, more likely than not, something went bad. Probably the ABS assembly as it is a typical issue with that style Ford.

Could a computer have fried? I guess it would be possible but if the vehicle still runs and drives down the road, it isn't the PCM.

Looking for a reputable service technician? My advice on finding a good technician is: Steer clear of the dealership and 'chain' stores like Firestone, Sears, Pep Boys, Monro Muffler/Brake, Midas, etc. as they usually only employ ONE ASE Certified Tech just so they can say they do and chances are, that guy is the asst. manager or manager and is not in the store to diagnose/repair vehicles anyway. Find a service location in the link below or get some names out of the yellow-pages and do a drive-by. Garages that employ ASE Certified Technicians will be marked with the 'Blue-Seal' insignia. If unsure about whether a place employs Certified Techs, just ask to see their credentials. ALL ASE Certified Technicians will be PROUD to show and display their certificate(s).

Thanks for the question, I hope this information was helpful to you.
