Auto Parts: Motor, vacuum advance, pep boys

Question
i have an 498 stoker motor very torque/big cam paired with a 5 speed manual transmission with 3:73 gears. At low speeds im getting a jerking motion or when i let off the gas, is this normal

Answer
Hi Den,

My first thought would be yeah, totally normal for something on the street with a wild cam. At nearly 500 cubes, she's gonna be a handful. As long as it is not to the point where it is loosening body mounts, you should be ok. If it is too much to handle, you may be able to cure the problem by adjusting the metering rods or by up-jetting the carb. Maybe a size or two bigger will give the engine more fuel just off-idle where you are experiencing your issue. You may also want to try retarding the timing a degree or two which will also cause a skip because the vacuum advance may be moving the timing too far advanced too quickly as soon as you crack the throttle open.

Looking for a reputable service technician? My advice on finding a good technician is: Steer clear of the dealership and 'chain' stores like Firestone, Sears, Pep Boys, Monro Muffler/Brake, Midas, etc. as they usually only employ ONE ASE Certified Tech just so they can say they do and chances are, that guy is the asst. manager or manager and is not in the store to diagnose/repair vehicles anyway. Find a service location in the link below or get some names out of the yellow-pages and do a drive-by. Garages that employ ASE Certified Technicians will be marked with the 'Blue-Seal' insignia. If unsure about whether a place employs Certified Techs, just ask to see their credentials. ALL ASE Certified Technicians will be PROUD to show and display their certificate(s).

Thanks for the question, I hope this information was helpful to you.
