Auto Parts: Clutch/starter switch, chrysler sebring, clutch pedal

Question
I think my clutch/starter switch has gone bad in my 2001 chrysler sebring. The car wont even turn over but it has a automatic response to everything else so i know its not the battery. the only thing i believe it can be with the clutch switch or the starter. When i go to start the car it makes no sound if i dont have the clutch pushed in. once i push in the clutch it makes a humming sound almost. how would i mayb by pass or take the clutch/starter switch out to see if it is the starter or not?

Answer
Hi Jason,

Too much extra work if ya ask me. Everyone wants to just replace parts, how about testing to see exactly what is wrong instead of removing impossible-to-reach switches to find out there was a loose connection at the starter.

Get a 12 volt test light or a multi-meter set on DC-voltage. ground the tester and probe the starter 'hot' wire at the starter while someone turns the key to the start position w/clutch pedal in and see what the tester reads. If it registers voltage, bad starter or solenoid and if no voltage present, trace it backwards to the switch and test the incoming power to the switch. Power present, bad switch, no power would mean going further back to the ignition switch.

Looking for a reputable service technician? My advice on finding a good technician is: Steer clear of the dealership and 'chain' stores like Firestone, Sears, Pep Boys, Monro Muffler/Brake, Midas, etc. as they usually only employ ONE ASE Certified Tech just so they can say they do and chances are, that guy is the asst. manager or manager and is not in the store to diagnose/repair vehicles anyway. Find a service location in the link below or get some names out of the yellow-pages and do a drive-by. Garages that employ ASE Certified Technicians will be marked with the 'Blue-Seal' insignia. If unsure about whether a place employs Certified Techs, just ask to see their credentials. ALL ASE Certified Technicians will be PROUD to show and display their certificate(s).

Thanks for the question, I hope this information was helpful to you.
