Auto Parts: a/c compressor, pep boys, replacement warranty

Question
QUESTION: I have a 1995 S15 sonoma p/u with a 2.2 engine. my A/C comperssor is a harrison #1135216. I've checked with GM and a local junk yard and have been told that only a 94-95 S10 or S15 will work. I'm sure there has to be others that will work. Any suggestions?

ANSWER: Hi Thomas,

My suggestion is to NOT listen to the advice you already have.

According to Hollander (THE definitive source for interchange notes), you can get an AC Compressor from ANY 1995 S10/S15/Sonoma as long as it has a 2.2L engine. Pull one from a 1994 and you'll have a big paper weight. GM might tell you a 1994 edition will work, and in certain instances they will as long as you match up the part numbers that are compatible with yours. (1135216 or 1135403) But 'officially', the interchange for your compressor is '95 ONLY.

I can get one to your door, guaranteed to be correct and with a 30-day replacement warranty, for $100.00.

Looking for a reputable service technician? My advice on finding a good technician is: Steer clear of the dealership and 'chain' stores like Firestone, Sears, Pep Boys, Monro Muffler/Brake, Midas, etc. as they usually only employ ONE ASE Certified Tech just so they can say they do and chances are, that guy is the asst. manager or manager and is not in the store to diagnose/repair vehicles anyway. Find a service location in the link below or get some names out of the yellow-pages and do a drive-by. Garages that employ ASE Certified Technicians will be marked with the 'Blue-Seal' insignia. If unsure about whether a place employs Certified Techs, just ask to see their credentials. ALL ASE Certified Technicians will be PROUD to show and display their certificate(s).

Thanks for the question, I hope this information was helpful to you.

QUESTION: Fred-- thanks for the info. is there anyother vechials that use the same compressor as in cavalier or bretta or corisca. After becommin disabled from my lst job I've let my serts go, was one sept from a master. Also the compressor you have is it reman or used?

Answer
Hi Thomas,

The interchange for your compressor is ONLY '95 with a 2.2L engine. NO other compressor from ANY other vehicle will bolt-up. Not sure how much you understand about interchanging parts, you state you have a mechanical background so I'll just expect you to know the concept. When I say no other compressors from any other vehicle will bolt-up, that doesn't include fabrication. Can another compressor from another vehicle fit on your engine and operate? Possibly, but you'd definitely have to fabricate something to make it fit and/or function. Typically, it is not worth the aggravation to modify mounts or flanges to retro-fit something that was never designed to be used on that application. Who knows, the ones from Cavalier 2.2L engines might fit but have a different pulley or the clock-position of the inlet/outlet flange may be different than that of your Sonoma.

The unit I have here is used but we have a reman operation here and we can always rebuild you one or rebuild yours if it is still a good core unit.

Master Certification is nice to have whether you are in the field or not. Your knowledge can be put to good use on a forum such as this one helping those who would otherwise be getting raped by dealerships.
