Auto Parts: installing dodge ram hub, dodge ram 1500, hub assembly

Question
when installing a new hub assembly on the front a 1998 dodge ram 1500 4x4 do i need the sheet metal guard that is behind the brake disc? If not do I need to use a spacer in its place?

Answer
Hi Tom,

Yes, you absolutely need the backing plate installed.

Manufacturers don't typically put items on vehicles that don't need to be there because it costs money to do that and yes, that cost is passed right on to the customer, but there is no use for adding useless, costly items.

The backing plate/shield behind your hub keeps grit and water off of the brakes as well as keeps them cool when they need it to keep from warping. On your Dodge, I think the backing plate also is where the wheel speed sensor is attached although certain styles used tone-rings on the hub instead.

The point is, for the minimal cost of a backing plate there is no logical reason to not install it if it is bad.

Looking for a reputable service technician? My advice on finding a good technician is: Steer clear of the dealership and 'chain' stores like Firestone, Sears, Pep Boys, Monro Muffler/Brake, Midas, etc. as they usually only employ ONE ASE Certified Tech just so they can say they do and chances are, that guy is the asst. manager or manager and is not in the store to diagnose/repair vehicles anyway. Find a service location in the link below or get some names out of the yellow-pages and do a drive-by. Garages that employ ASE Certified Technicians will be marked with the 'Blue-Seal' insignia. If unsure about whether a place employs Certified Techs, just ask to see their credentials. ALL ASE Certified Technicians will be PROUD to show and display their certificate(s).

Thanks for the question, I hope this information was helpful to you.
