Auto Parts: Automatic Flywheel vs. Manual flywheel, nissan sentra, flex plate

Question
I'm looking to purchase a flywheel for a Nissan sentra 99 and i was wondering before i purchase this item is it a difference in Flywheel the one im about to purchase in labeled Manual Flywheel Nissan Sentra from ebay is it a difference since the car is a automatic?

Answer
Hi Terrance,

Back-in-the-day there was a difference between an automatic transmission flywheel and a manual transmission flex-plate. Today vehicles are designed with either of them whether they be auto or manual equipped.

A flywheel by definition contains at least a single row of geared-teeth for the starter to turn over the engine. A flex-plate, usually in the form of a big thick 'X', is what the flywheel on manual trans equipped vehicles would mount to. Modern vehicles show little to no difference in the two assemblies anymore and flex-plates are being completely phased-out because it is just another link that can go bad. Their original use was as the weak-link between the trans and the engine. Breaking a flex-plate due to over-torquing the engine is a cheap fix for replacing an entire transmission unit due to the same cause.

Onto your other question. If I knew exactly what vehicle and engine size you are asking about I'd be able to tell you for sure if there is a difference on your vehicle between manual and auto flywheels. From experience I can assure you that very few flywheels are interchangeable from auto's to manual's.

Thanks for the question, I hope this information was helpful to you.
