Auto Parts: 6.5 diesel problems, combustion chambers, pan gasket

Question
I bought a 1993 chevy k3500 truck with a 6.5 turbo diesel. it smokes bad when it is first started then as it warms up a bit the smoke goes away. any ideas on how to fix?. also I need to replace the pan gasket on this truck. can I get the pan off without lifting the motor?

Answer
Hi Dan,

First diesel?

It is common for a diesel engine to smoke pretty good when first started because diesel fuel burns best when the pre-combustion chambers are hot. Sounds like your engine may have low compression if it is excessively smoking though. I'd do a compression test on the engine and go from there. You should not see more than 10% difference from cylinder to cylinder. Any more of a drop than that and that would indicate an issue.

Engine mounts will need to be disconnected before pulling that pan as you will have to lift the engine slightly to get the pan passed the pick-up tube.

Thanks for the question, I hope this information was helpful to you.
