Auto Parts: 99 Dodge Neon, dodge neon, tow truck driver

Question
I drive a manual transmission 99 Dodge Neon (70,000 miles) and had the unfortunate experience of having the gear shift go out on me (in the middle of traffic, no less). The tow truck driver speculated that my linkage may be broken. Would you say this is an easy fix? I am wondering what a good/reasonable cost would be-- I need to figure out if the repair is going to be worth it or if its just time to trade baby in!

Answer
Hi Kelli,

If you're asking my advice, I would be looking in the paper or whatever to find another ride. If it is just a cable, you can probably get that from a Chrysler dealership, even though it'll probably cost about $200.00 or you can try and locate a good one at a recycling facility but if it broke on yours, chances are good that all of the cable assemblies from that era of Neon have similar flaws. If it is just a cable, you may want to replace it as it will be more cost effective than purchasing another vehicle but if it turns out to be the shifter assembly itself, finding one of those at a recycling facility may be more trouble than the vehicle is worth, but it is your vehicle and only you can say for sure what you think it is worth.

Thanks for the question, I hope this information was helpful to you.
