Auto Parts: ABS, wheel speed, metal probe

Question
I have a 1997 F-150 Lariat 2WD 4.6 V-8. There is a small metal probe pointing at the back ( ribbed ) side of the front rotor. It is protruding through the dust shield. This probe is connected to a wire and is rusted off. What is this part called and would that trip my ABS warning light being rusted off? ........Thank you, GP

Answer
Hi Glenn,

I believe the part you are referring to is the wheel speed sensor. This pointed probe reads a magnetic ring probably a part of the hub or rotor. If the probe is damaged or broken, it will trip the ABS light because the computer thinks that wheel is stopped, but since it is reading other sensors that are saying the vehicle IS moving, the ABS has no choice but to disable itself. The thinking is that even in an event you would benefit from the use of the ABS, having ONE sensor not reading may do more to upset the balance of the vehicle in an emergency than having NO ABS functioning. Your brakes should operate normally other than not having the ABS feature. It's advised to have that sensor replaced as soon as possible for the safety of the occupants. If your state requires annual inspections, your vehicle will fail if the ABS or Check Engine light is illuminated.

Thanks for the question, I hope this information was helpful to you.
