Auto Parts: JEEP 4X4 PART INTERCHANGE, jeep 4x4, transmission id

Question
WILL THE TRANSMISSION, CLUTCH AND TRANSFER CASE FROM AN 89 CHEROKEE 4CYL FIT DIRECTLY TO AN 89 6CYL?  HOW MANY DIFFERENT UNITS EXIST?
WHERE ARE THE ID TAGS LOCATED AND HOW TO I INTERPRET THEM?

Answer
Hi scott,

Unfortunately, no. The 4cylinder bell-housing design differs from that of the 6cylinder models.

For the 4cylinder model, only one transmission was available in either 2 or 4WD designs

ID tags for the transmission: ID numbers will be stamped into the thin side of the case near the right-rear of the machined pan mount area. There were no ID's stamped into the AX5 designs which is what is currently in yours. T-Case tags will usually be found on the next-to-top case bolt on the right side of the case facing rearward. T-Case codes varied by year and production run (some were made by Chrysler, some by Borg-Warner, etc.) so when you find the tag, send a follow-up with the code info and I'll try and decode it for you.

Thanks for the question, I hope this information was helpful to you.
