Steering Column Repair: steering column, cadillac deville, shift cable

Question
I have a 1994 Cadillac deville and when i try to put the car in gear it just freely flows without moving out of park I would like to know how to fix this and what tools i might need.

Answer
Hi Delano:

Sorry about your car.  It sounds like the shift cable has come disconnected or has broken.  You will need to look under the dash, on top of the column near the floor and see if the cable is still attached tot the column.  If it is, does it move with the shifter?  If it is not, the reconnect it and try again.  The problem could also be under the hood as well.  I am assuming it is a front wheel drive and the shift cable will go to the transmission under the hood.  That is where you need to look for action when you shift the lever.  Typically it is not something in the column, but rather something attached to it (the cable or linkage) that fails

Good luck
