Auto Parts: confussion about a part, mercedes benz 300e, fuel pressure regulator

Question
QUESTION: I have a 300e Mercedes with car problems.  My local mechanic found I have a fuel leak under the hood.  He called the Mercedes dealership and they say it is a governor regulator, but they asked a fortune for the small part.  My mechanic and they agree it is a 2" X 3" cylinder with 2 hoses.  I've called many local import parts dealers and they say they have nothing called a governor regulator.  They seem to think this is a fuel pressure regulator.    Do you think this is the same part?

ANSWER: Hi Cara,

I think it would be ok to assume that the two part names are probably being interchanged.

A fuel pressure regulator would have THREE attachments though. One for incoming fuel flow, one for outgoing, regulated fuel flow and a third for a vacuum source or electrical connector if it is digital and not mechanical.

Send a follow-up with your VIN and I'll try and locate a complete fuel rail with regulator for what will surely be less than the dealership wants JUST for the regulator.

Thanks for the question, I hope this information was helpful to you.

QUESTION: Thank you so much for your answer.  My mechanic said there are 3 but he wasn't sure if the 3rd was a vacuum or what.  I will let him know what you said.
My 1990 Mercedes 300E has a 2.6 cyl motor.
The VIN is WDBEA30D7LB231461

Answer
Hi Cara,

First, Your VIN breaks down as follows:
1990 MERCEDES-BENZ 300E, SEDAN 4 DR, 3.0L L6 FI, GERMANY.

You state you have a 2.6l. Please confirm which you have. I can get you the injectors and rail (with regulator) but the price is not as low as I'd expect for a vehicle of that vintage. You are probably looking at $165.00 for the whole assembly including shipping to you. But that is for the 3.0 that your VIN lists and our interchange does not recognize a difference in the injectors/rail between the 2.6L and the 3.0L engines. To be sure, I would only pull the assembly from a vehicle/engine combination identical to yours. You can probably get just the regulator at a better cost from the supplier.

Thanks for the question, I hope this information was helpful to you.
