Auto Parts: egr valve for 97 pontiac sunfire, air control valve, pontiac sunfire

Question
Hello,
I am experiencing rough idle on my 97 Sunfire, 2.2l. I replaced fuel filter, spark plugs and idle air control valve.
It got better but once in a while when I stop on lights it will miss for a split second and you feel car jerk little bit. I read that egr valve might cause this. How can I check this. Valve is expensive and I don't want to buy it if I'm not sure that this is the problem. Can I check this valve that it's working properly?
Thank you
Roman

Answer
Hi Roman,

Remove the EGR and make a thin piece of steel that will act as a block for the two holes in the base of the EGR effectively blocking it from transferring gasses. If the engine operates ok with the EGR blocked, then I'd have to say that it may be your problem.

The EGR ONLY operates once the vehicle reaches NOT (Normal Operating Temperature) and if it sticks open, will cause rough idle and stalling. By blocking it, you effectively remove it from the system and it is like it was never attached in the first place. That is the best test for that system short of spending a ton of money replacing an item that may not be bad.

If the vehicle operates same after you block the EGR, then there is another problem. Send a follow-up and let me know either way.

Thanks for the question, I hope this information was helpful to you.
