Auto Parts: question on a dodge charger 3.5L V6 for 2008 charger SE+, dodge charger, fifteen minutes

Question
Hello,

I just have a quick Q on an engine block of a 08 charger SE plus, the very front vertical part of the engine right behind the belts looks kinda dry and cracked but it's actually not, why does it look like that? I checked on all the same engines and they all are like that so it doesnt seem like its just one engine or defect.

Thank you

Steve

Answer
Hi Steve,

That is a normal side-effect of aluminum casting. Those parts are injection-molded and the dies that are used are water-cooled to facilitate the cooling of the part being molded. Instead of having to cool the item IN the mold which would take about fifteen minutes, the dies are cooled and the cast only takes seconds to harden enough to remove from the die and therefore the die can be used to produce more parts, faster with less down-time. The small cracks and seems that form because of the process are normal and an accepted side-effect. All aluminum-injection-molded parts like that are pressure-tested by a separate machine once cooled completely to insure a quality part.

Thanks for the question, I hope this information was helpful to you.
