Auto Parts: problem w/ fuel pump, chevrolet cheyenne, chilton manual

Question
QUESTION: i drive a 1997 chevrolet cheyenne ext cab 4wd w/ a 4.3 v-6. i'm havin problems w/ the fuel pump, it doesn't make a humming sound like normal when i go to start the truck.  the truck it self has  158,000 miles on it.  would the fuel pump itself be goin bad or  is it  somethin else?

ANSWER: Hi Nick,

If your pump has fed fuel to that engine for the last 158K, consider yourself lucky it lasted this long.

The pump should cycle on and then off after about two seconds if the engine is not started after the key is turned to the "ON" position. You should stand next to the relay/fuse center under the hood while someone turns the key 'ON' and listen for the relay to click on and then off. If the relay is operating, the pump is most likely bad.

Thanks for the question, I hope this information was helpful to you.

QUESTION: i looked under the hood for the fuel pump relay, but i never saw it, lookin right where the chilton's book said to look, according to the chilton's  book, the fuel pump relay should be right next to the coolant reservior and the a/c bottle in the passanger side of the firewall, could the relay be located somewhere else? if so, where would it be located?

Answer
Hi nick,

I don't know what the Chilton manual is saying, but most of the fuel pump relays for GM vehicles are mounted near or on the firewall. There should be a relay center with a few relays and some big fuses probably near the brake reservoir. Your owners manual would be most helpful in directing you to the location of it if you still have it.

Thanks again for the question, I hope this information was helpful to you.
