Auto Parts: Ford focus, current diagnosis, new clock

Question
Hi There

I have a 04 Automatic Transmission Ford Focus Gia 2 litre.  Over recent weeks i have had a variety of warning lights comming on and of at different times and also, at times, the tripometer and millege clock go blank and all dials drop to zero but usually recover seconds latter.

I have been told by a local garage that i need a new clock cluster (they decided this after using some electrrical gizmo to bypass the display and check for faults with the cars electrics without the display).  they where going to do this for me but they seem to be dragging there feet about this so i have thought about doing this for myself.

Q  Does the diagnosis that the garage came up with sound right to you?

Q  I am also told that to replace the clock is resonably easy and have found someonme to supply the clock for me, is it as easy as taking the old one out and plugging the new one in with some form of conector?  (Can handle most DIY jobs but not that confident with cars)

I realise that it is probably hard to answer both these question based on the little info i have given you but i would appreciate any help you can offer.

cheers

james

Answer
Hi James,
With the many modules on cars produced these days, anything is possible. I've never heard a clock giving anyone problems like you are encountering, but it IS possible. replacing items in cars these days is far easier than it was ten, twenty years ago. There are very few screws used anymore, most trim panels and such will simply be 'snapped' into place and they just snap right back off to reveal the mounting hardware for the item you are trying to replace. I would DEFINITELY get a second opinion if you question the current diagnosis. I always recomend against the dealership because they will ALWAYS find some expensive item to replace whether it needs it or not so try and locate a reputable auto technician in your area. Look for ASE certifications as they are usually a good indication the technician has some clue what they are doing. Once you find a good, reputable technician, it is wise to stay with them and tell your friends because we are HARD to find!
Thanks for the question. I hope this information helps you.
