Auto Parts: windshield wipers, 1997 pontiac sunfire, pontiac sunfire

I have a 1997 Pontiac Sunfire SE 2.2L.  My windshield wipers stopped working today.  They went up halfway and that was it.  I had to push them back down.  The wiper fluid comes out fine. When I put the wipers on full speed, I hear a noise like it is trying to work.  I checked the fuse and it was fine as well.  How do I know if the wiper motor is bad?  Do you know what else could be the problem?

That's what it sounds like to me. I think on that car you can remove the windshield cowling and access the wiper transmission. Turn the wipers on and see what they are doing. It is possible that the transmission arm simply popped off of the motor (ball and socket joint).
