Car Alarms: Alarm on/off toggle switch, jeep grand cherokee laredo, grand cherokee laredo

Question
I recently purchased a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo.  There is no problem with the alarm other than the fact that much of the time, in my rural setting, I'd rather it did not work.  I was told by the seller that the on/off toggle switch under the dash at the far left driver's side shuts the alarm on and off.  But the toggle switch is presently set to "off" and the alarm is working just fine.  Is there some trick to making the switch work?  I can find no difference in the way the alarm works regardless of whether it's set to "On" or "Off."

Answer
Make sure you do the procedure correctly.
Might have missed a step:

PUT IGNITION KEY IN IGNITION,
KEY ON TO JUST BEFORE CRANKING THE ENGINE.
PRESS IN AND HOLD VALET SWITCH
UNTIL YOU GET A RESPONCE
FROM THE ALARM.

KEY OFF.

This should toggle the alarm in and out of
valet/override.

If toggle type switch.
KEY ON, FLIP SWITCH, KEY OFF,
ALARM DISARMS, START THE CAR.

I hope this solved it for you.
