Car Alarms: disabling a car alarm, red push, turning the key

Question
My wife has a 1998 Camry with an alarm system. I don't know whether or not it is factory installed but on the dashboard (just left of the steering wheel)there is a red push button light. The battery went dead yesterday and when the battery was replaced the alarm went off. I don't know what I did but, I kept turning the key on an off and moving the car in and out of gear and the alarm finally quit. Now the red light appears to stay lit (not flashing but constant) but the alarm is no longer going off. I am all for leaving well enough alone but it sure would be nice to know the proper procedure to arm and disarm this system
