Car Alarms: factory & after market alarm, valet mode, dash area

Question
I recently purchased a 2001 Ford Expedition from a private sale. It has a factory & after market alarm. I was told by the owner that he used the after market, but I could use either one. It was working fine for a few days, until my daughter set off the alarm by opening a door, I shut it off with the remote. Since then it hasn't worked properly. All remotes will lock and unlock the car, but will only set off the lights after it's armed with the after market, siren will not sound at all. I've tried resetting it, but not sure if I'm doing it right. It's driving me crazy, I feel both alarms are working against each other, because siren will sound if I press the panic on the factory alarm, so I know the siren works. Is there any way to disconnect just one? and reset the other? both are antitheft so I'm not sure why the after market was installed.

Answer
It appears from your expaination, that the
after market car alarm is in service mode.

Ok, try this.
Put the key in the ignition, and turn forward
all the way just before cranking. Then within
5 seconds, press and hold in the valet/overide
button, found under the dash area, usually to the
left of the leg drilled into a hidden away spot,
until the installed LED (the blinking light)
in your dash area goes off, and the siren chirps twice.
(Your valet switch might be the toggle (on/off) type.
in this case, key on, flip switch in oposite direction,
key off.)

This should reset the alarm.

Just Repeat these steps to place it
back to valet mode.

That should do it.
Let me know what happens.
