Car Alarms: PATS alarm question, 2001 ford tarus, ford service

Question
QUESTION: Hi, I have a 2001 Ford Tarus that uses the keys with the chip inside the key-top.  Anyway, I have two keys and wanted a 3rd made just-in-case.  I got a key blank from an internet key provider & had a local auto locksmith cut the key to match the two that I already had(and worked).  I didn't have a chance to program the 3rd(new)key so I know it probably wouldn't work. This morning my daughter tried the wrong key & the car didn't start. It didn't do anything. Then she got one of the two original keys and says the car still won't start, or even turn over.  Is it possible that by using the un-programmed key that the car will now not let any key work?  Even the two that had been working?

ANSWER: Yep. The FORD PATS SYSTEM is locked down now.
Bad. In the ignition is a reader that matches the transponder
pellet in the key. This controls the fuel rail
to the injectors. When the bad
key was introduced, it popped the security cap and it
engages the PATS.

Let me save you some time
and just go to the reality part of
this nightmare. :>(

A quick tow and a reset by computer is required and
HAVE THOSE KEYS (BOTH) WITH YOU WHEN YOU GO!
This is done by VIN number and Ford proprietory
diagnostic software a mechanic will not have.
So you need to go to Ford service ASAP.

Just go to do this and don't spend the money
simply trying because all the snake oil out
there will not do a complete ignition PATS reset.

Once back to "OEM spec", Kill it,
bypass it alltogether!

The bypass kit for
this is called the IM04 and I have
them in stock.

Then no more PATS issues.

Good luck.

QUESTION: Thanks for the quick reply.  When I got home after work last night the car did start so that was good news.  My daughter did confirm that she put in the non-programmed key 1st & the car wouldn't do anything at all. Then she tried the correct key & still got nothing.  Several hours later when I got home the car started(using the correct key).  Anyway how much do these IMO4 kits cost & how hard is it to install them?  I have two Ford Taurus'es and on F150 and they all have the PATS system so I may have to do all 3.

ANSWER: Likely to fit all of them ;>) (89.95 ea.)
but to be certain, model & year of each?
(can be cheaper on the f150)

QUESTION: HI and again, thanks for the quick reply.  How do these IMO4 kits work?  Do they make the keys with the chips non-usuable after installing the kit?  Can I make generic key copy's after that? Doesn't the car computer read the info from the PATS system in order to start the car?

Answer
Esentially, it learns the codes from the keys
and moves the transponder farther down in the
steering column. You should then be able to use any key
work in the ignition since the system catches the codes
before it.

& yes the PATS shuts down the fuel injection rail.
But the codes are FORD propietary usage only,
So you can not get the info and match the transponder without the
original keys to initially program the bypass kits.

And I checked, Your best option is the IM04-PKFM bypass
kit for all of these. 89.95
