Car Alarms: Valet Button Repair, subaru forester, button function

Question
1999 Subaru Forester S (I have been conversing with you on another topic).

The system status indicator is an LED in the dash.  The Valet Button function is integrated, you push the lens that the LED is in.

Mine is broken and many of the little pieces of plastic are "missing" (in the dash I suppose, cannot find).  I assume someone pushed "too hard".  There appears to be only the LED and two wires hooked to it.

The LED on the end of the two wires still works.

How did the "Button" function work?  All I can think of is that perhaps it shorted the LED wires to signal a button push.  But I don't want to try this and fry the LED driver if I am wrong.

Do you know how this works?  Thank you.

Answer
Ok then, Sounds like an older Code Alarm.
In any case, get over to the local car alarm shop,
or even a Best Buys will
have a valet switch that will fit for your
alarm.

In the mean time, locate the 2 wires (non powered) that were
connected and are hanging free.

Then twist together, turn on the ignition,
hold both wires to ground until the siren chirps.

That should reset and place the alarm into
over ride for now. Nothing accept the keyless entry
if installed will operate until you repeat the
same steps.

Then get a new switch and you're all set.
