Car Alarms: door security alarm goes off inadvertently, acura legend, dash area

Question
QUESTION: I have a 1993 Acura Legend. When leaving the car, if I push the lock switch down to lock the car before closing the door, the security system will often go off after a period of time (could be minutes to hours). If I lock the door with a key, it does not tend to go off. In addition, and I don't know if it is related, the door lock switches tend to cycle on and off (up and down) and I have occasionally been inadvertently locked out (I got out with car running and the doors locked on me). How do I fix my security system or disconnect it altogether?

ANSWER: Not sure what aftermarket system you have
there, but this is what I think is going
on....

The alarm seems to be in long tamper mode.
You will need to reset, and possibly
re program the remotes. That part you will need
your manual for, but the aftermarket alarm
seems to be doing it's job.
At least we know it's installed correctly
which is actually a good thing here.

Ok, try this.
Put the key in the ignition, and turn forward
all the way just before cranking. Then within
5 seconds, locate, press and hold in the
valet/overide button, found under the
dash area, (push button, spring loaded)
until the installed LED (the blinking light)
in your dash area goes on solid,
and the siren chirps once.

(Your valet switch might be the toggle
(on/off) type. in this case, key on,
flip switch in opposite direction,
then turn the key off.)

This should reset the alarm, and reset
the grounded relay on the starter wire,
allowing you to start the engine.

At this point, the only thing working would
be the keyless entry from the alarm,
if it came equipped that way.

Just Repeat these steps to place it
back to usable armed mode.
You may get 2 chirps, confirming it,
and the lights may flash twice as well.

That should do it.
If you want to remove it at this point,
take it to your neighborhood installer
for this, or buy the wiring chart
(Go to: www.vehiclewires.com)
for the vehicle, and reverse engineer it wire
by wire, until safely removed.

If it does not work out this way,
you will have to replace the system
with one you know how to operate
and what to expect. Don't want to
get stuck in another bad situation.

Let me know what happens.

QUESTION: Your response says "don't know what aftermarket system you have" which sounds like something that one adds after you get the car. My security system came with the Acura (factory installed I presume). Does this make a change to your answer?

ANSWER: That may be one of the systems here, but it does appear you might
have another. Is there a siren or does it flash the park lights?

A.

QUESTION: Answer: When the security system goes off, the horn blows intermitently and the headlights flash along with it.

Thanks for your help.

Answer
Hmmm, ok,
A bit complicated. There is a blue wire at the
lock mechanism in the door you can ground that
would POSSIBLY rener it disabled, but here's
what I know....

This system depends on the physical action
of the door lock locking and unlocking-arming and disarming.
If you have a factory remote, that would do this to
specifications.

This can only be achieved 3 ways:

1. Use key in the drivers door, turn left,
then right to disarm and unlock.

2. Add an after market keyless entry system to emulate
the factory remote functions. I have several models
if this option suits you.

3. Acquire or, replace the original remote that
can control it as specified. This would be at the
local dealership parts department.

Keep in mind, if this is after market
(siren and flashing parking lights)
then it's a different method entirely.

The standard method to disables as follows:

Look under the dash area for a button or, a toggle
switch. When you locate it, turn on the ignition
key, press and hold in the button (little
spring loaded micro button, red or black possibly)
until the alarm chirps 1 time. This should over ride
the system, and only the keyless entry part,
if installed, would still be operating.
The LED (light emitting diode) light in the dash
should also go on solid. If it's a toggle type,
then key on, flip the switch in the other direction
This would be OVERRIDE/VALET mode.

Repeat this process to toggle back to service mode.

Let me know what applies
to your issues.
