Car Alarms: 2001 Malibu Alarm Keeps Going Off After Other Car Set It Off..., chevy malibu, alarmtek

Question
QUESTION: Hello,

I am desperate for help.  A few weeks ago I was at a friend of my father's house with my 2001 Chevy Malibu. The owner of this house owned a late model Ford Explorer. The owner kept having to run out to run some errands a few times, and whenever they would press their car alarm button to unlock or lock their car, it would set my car alarm off. My car wouldn't respond to my keychain button anymore, at least not until multiple attempts. I would say this happened 3 or 4 times during the day.  Ever since, my car alarm has been "wacked out". It will go off for no apparent reason, on a perfectly quiet and non-windy day. Its driving me (and my neighbors) crazy. I don't know what to do. Frankly, the car isn't worth much and I'd be happy if it didn't have an alarm in it period, since the thing is nothing but a hassle, but for now I'm just wondering what happened and if I can get it fixed. Did the Ford Explorer somehow screw up my own car alarm's frequency?

I am not sure if the alarm was factory installed or aftermarket installed as I bought it used, and the alarm has just always been there. I'm moving for college in a week and if my car alarm goes off while i am not there, they will have my car towed. I really need any advice asap if you could help. Thanks so much in advance for helping me out with this strange problem! :)

ANSWER: I need to determine whether it's a factory alarm
issue or, if it's an aftermarket system you are
dealing with.

Is it: Headlights flashing, car horn honking
and a worded SECURITY" light in the dash flashing?
(doubtfull since none of the notes show this
car as having a factory alarm system)=FACTORY

Or,

is it: flashing parking lights,
an LED in the dash area, and a siren
going off?= AFTER MARKET

Let me know more on this to better
advise you on a course of action
to take.

QUESTION: There is a siren and LED in the dash area, and the parking lights go off, although I believe the headlights blink too, although I could be mistaken. So most likely it is an aftermarket based on the parameters you stated?

Answer
Alrighty,
You'll need to set off the alarm for a few seconds.
Then, turn on the ignition
key, press and hold in the button
until the alarm chirps 1 time. This should over ride
the system, and only the keyless entry part,
if installed, would still be operating.
The LED (light emiting diode) light in the dash
should also go on solid.

At this point. the alarm would have reset.
If this had a starter kill relay installed,
it would now be opened, and the engine would
turn over when tried. This is override/reset.

You would repeat these steps to go back to
user mode but in your case.

Let me know what you discover.
