Car Alarms: Remotes not working, viper alarm system, ford van

Hi, My dad has a 96 Ford Van with a Viper alarm system. He was able to arm the alarm one day, but the next day was unable to disarm it.Not sure what happened, but Both remotes have batteries, is there anyway to manually override this by using the key without setting off alarm? Or does the alarm remote need to be reprogrammed?
