Car Alarms: Car alarm in 1996 Monte Carlo, chevy monte carlo, joe cassidy

I have a 1996 Chevy Monte Carlo with an aftermarket alarm in it that I don't know if it works. The brand is Clifford; the siren is under the hood by the latch and the red light on driver side dash. I don't have a remote but would like to know how to check to see if its still working or not. My husband wants to do this himself. The light on the dash never comes on so I am assuming its not connected. If i were to get a remote off of ebay would it work if its the same brand? Any help would be appreciated.
