Car Alarms: Faulty 2000 Toyota RAV 4 alarm, toyota rav 4, mirror adjustment

Question
QUESTION: I have a factory installed car alarm in my 2000 Toyota RAV 4.  When I turned off my car and opened the door the other night, the alarm went off (horn beeping, lights blinking).  I pushed the key remote several times and the alarm turned off (I don't know if I turned off the alarm or if it went off by itself).  Now the alarm seems to be disabled and I cannot open my doors with my key remote (I can only open my doors manually).  Do you have any suggestions as to how to fix this?  Thanks in advance.

ANSWER: Please tell me what you are experiencing.

I need to determine whether it's a factory alarm
issue or, if it's an aftermarket system you are
dealing with.

Is it: Headlights flashing, car horn honking
and a worded SECURITY" light in the dash flashing?
(doubtfull since none of the notes show this
car as having a factory alarm system)=FACTORY

Or,

is it: flashing parking lights,
an LED in the dash area, and a siren
going off?= AFTER MARKET

Let me know more on this to better
advise you on a course of action
to take.

QUESTION: My father (who I purchased the RAV from), bought the car from a Toyota dealer right off the floor fully loaded already, so he's not sure whether the alarm was factory installed or after-market.  Reading your e-mail, I would have thought it's an after market alarm (since none of the notes show this car as having a factory alarm system).  However, in looking at the dash to the left of the steering wheel, right below the mirror adjustment, there are 3 small rectangles, one of which says "Toyota Security" noted on it.  The light which turns on when I activate the alarm is located in the middle of the words Toyota Security.  Since all this happened, the light has not gone on.  As far as I know, there is no siren attached to the car, I believe the car horns were honking and lights (don't know if they were my headlights or parking lights) were flashing.  Since I was out of the car when this happened, I couldn't tell whether anything was blinking in the dash.  Let me know if you need anything else.  Thanks again for your help!

Answer
Well, that's interesting, and good info to go on.
I have the notes on this car, and you are correct.
This one does not have an after market system.

I am thinking it was installed at the dealership
and sold as having a "factory alarm & keyless"
system.

Ok, try the following:

let's put it into valet/service mode,
and try to reset the alarm to default mode.

Look under the dash area for a button or, a toggle
switch. When you locate it, turn on the ignition
key, press and hold in the button (little
spring loaded micro button, red or black possibly)
until the alarm chirps 1 time. This should over ride
the system, and only the keyless entry part,
if installed, would still be operating.
The LED (light emiting diode) light in the dash
should also go on solid.

At this point. the alarm would have reset.
If this had a starter kill relay installed,
it would now be opened, and the engine would
turn over when tried.

You would repeat these steps to go back to
user mode to see if this was corrected.

Let me know if it works for yours.
