Car Alarms: How to tell if Grand Cherokee has keyless entry, and if not how to add, keyless entry system, remote keyless entry

Question
I have just purchased a 96 Grand Cherokee and I am wondering about a remote keyless entry system. I have read that in 96 Jeep made this standard but I can find anyone who can tell me how to look for it on my jeep or where to look. I did not get a fob with the purchase and if there is not one installed, I would like to install one. I do not know where to look for the unit but I am able to buy one from someone who is parting one out but he also does not know where to look or how to connect or disconnect the unit.

Answer
It does kave keyless capability from the factory.
It most likely came with 2 remotes, but getting new ones,
then programming them is the trick.

Start at the parts dept. at the local Jeep dealership.
You can also get new remotes at places like
www.remotes4you.com. www.autotechs.com , and www.keynfob.com
which all specialize in replacement OEM-After market
remotes. But programming them comes next. Not easy.

Parting out the remote won't work either, as all
remotes are different, and the one you are
considering 1, may not be the same series.
2. will need to be proframmed to the exsisting system,
and Jeep will need to do that.

Lastly, adding an after market keyless system is possible
sure, but mucho difficult, as this is the first year
GC that has the multiplexing lock & secrity system,
and each door would need to be relayed to get this done.
Tough for an installer, Very tough for a novice.

Take it to Jeep. Might be a bit pricey, but better if they
mess with this system, then you.

Good luck.
