Car Alarms: 2000 Tiburon Alarm not working, alarmtek, gauge cluster

Question
QUESTION: My girlfriend has a a 2000 Tiburon, and her sister had used it one day and then after trying to arm it, it would only lock the doors without a chirp, and not fully arming it. I've tried flipping the on/off toggle switch when turning the car in the on position within the 5 seconds and that didn't work either.

On a side note - When I try locking it, it seems to arm itself, but only making a dinging sound like a door is open (which it's not) and the gauge cluster blinks on and off.

The alarm came factory, and she has a remote with 2 buttons. One to unlock/unarmed - lock/armed and the second button I think may be a programming button.
(not sure - since it doesn't do any thing)
I've also swapped out the factory stereo with an after-market stereo. (if that makes a difference?)

I've also recently swapped out the car battery, since the other was drained (from what I think was the alarm not working right - since it wasn't working before the new battery, too)

Any help would be much appreciated!!

ANSWER: Please tell me what you are experiencing.

I need to determine whether it's a factory alarm
issue or, if it's an aftermarket system you are
dealing with.

Is it: Headlights flashing, car horn honking
and a worded SECURITY" light in the dash flashing?
(doubtfull since none of the notes show this
car as having a factory alarm system)
Or,
is it: flashing parking lights,
an LED in the dash area, and a siren
going off?

Let me know more on this to better
advise you on a course of action
to take, to help you to fix this
situation you're in quickly.

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: The only thing it's doing is the little red LED light above the steering wheel is either some times flashing red, or not flashing red. No headlights are flashing, or any thing outside or inside of the car. Only the gauge cluster (speedometer area) - As if the theft system came on. And it makes a sound as if a door was open when those lights on the dash flash.

Then I would have to flip the on/off toggle switch (under the dash area) again just to be able to start the car.

And the car horn isn't honking, and I'm not getting a siren, or a chirp.

Sorry with the lack of info last time!

Answer
Not sure what aftermarket system you have
there, but it's not a factory alarm.
This is what I think is going
on....

The alarm seems to be in long tamper mode.
You will need to reset, and possibly
re program the remotes. That part you will need
your manual for, but the aftermarket alarm
seems to be doing it's job.
At least we know it's installed correctly
which is actually a good thing here.

Ok, try this.
Put the key in the ignition, and turn forward
all the way just before cranking. Then within
5 seconds, flip switch in opposite direction,
then turn the key off.)

This should reset the alarm, and reset
the grounded relay on the starter wire,
allowing you to start the engine.

At this point, the only thing working would
be the keyless entry from the alarm,
if it came equipped that way.

Just Repeat these steps to place it
back to usable armed mode.
You may get 2 chirps, confirming it,
and the lights may flash twice as well.

That should do it.
If you want to remove it at this point,
take it to your neighborhood installer
for this, or buy the wiring chart
(Go to: www.vehiclewires.com)
for the vehicle, and reverse engineer it wire
by wire, until safely removed.

If it does not work out this way,
you will have to replace the system
with one you know how to operate
and what to expect. Don't want to
get stuck in another bad situation.

Let me know what happens.
