Car Alarms: 98 Subaru Legacy Alarm Going Off Randomly, keyless entry system, valet mode

Question
QUESTION: I own a 1998 Subaru Legacy GT Limited with the original Subaru keyless entry / alarm system.  Recently the alarm has been going off when people near my car arm or disarm their car's alarm.  This is particularly annoying to my neighbor every night when she arms her alarm which in turn sets mine off.

I've tried locking the doors manually and not arming the alarm but it still went off.  I've also tried putting the system into 'valet' mode but that didn't prevent the alarm from going off either.

Ideally I'd like to keep the keyless entry system and disable the alarm but at this point I'm interested in any options I have to prevent the alarm from going off, even if that means permanently disabling the whole system.

Thanks for whatever advice you have!

ANSWER: Sorry, but more input is required to give you
a good answer for this issue.

I need the make & model of the alarm system
if you know it please.

Also, is it a siren and flashing parking lights,
and an LED flashing in the dash when the alarm
"goes off"?<<<(likely from what I know about this car)

or,

Is it the headlights flashing, a worded "security"
or "anti-theft" blinking light in the dash cluster,
and the car's own horn honking?

This info helps me determine what alarm system
(after market or OEM-factory) that you are dealing
with.

Let me know and I will see if I can help you.

QUESTION: The alarm is the Subaru factory installed alarm/keyless entry system (The yellow box under the dash has the Subaru logo on it and the remotes do as well).  When the alarm goes off the sound is coming from a speaker and not the horn and I believe the parking lights flash.

There is a single LED in the dash to the left of the steering wheel and the alarm reset button under the dash near the fuse box.  The LED blinks approximately once every half-second when the alarm is armed.  When I put the car in valet mode the LED blinked twice, in rapid succession, every second.  In both cases the LED is dark when the car is running.

Hope that helps,

Answer
Alrighty then.
Normally, you would insert the key in
the drivers door, turn left, then right
to disarm and reset it. If yours is malfunctioning,
you can disable it for good by doing the following:

The FACTORY ALARM DISARM WIRE IS
green/lt. blue and is
Located in the drivers
door harness in the drivers kick
panel area. Remove the plastic
covering up the wire packs.

Once Located, splice into this wire with
a simular guage wire, and put it to
a solid chassis ground. This terminates
the alarm functions entirely.

However, at this point, this car would be exceedingly
easy to steel, so I suggest you get an aftermarket
alarm system to protect it from here on in.

Have a good day.
