Car Alarms: 96 Jetta alarm, conceivable variation, kick panel

Question
We have no remote for the 96 Jetta. Fairly certain it was factory installed, but when we went to get a replacement, dealer said one of two systems may have been installed and wanted $200 to pull it apart to see. We said forget it, we'll just use the keys. Now we've been trying for months to change the battery and the car alarm keeps going off. We've asked a dozen mechanics how to solve, and have gotten the answers re just letting the alarm go until it turns off, keys in the door to reset the alarm, key(s) in driver door while in the ignition, and every conceivable variation that comes to us. Nothing is working. Obviously we can't drive it anywhere, and towing it to the shop seems equally ridiculous. Our car thinks we are trying to steal it, and all we want to do is change the battery so we can finally sell it. Do you know anything to help us?

Answer
If it's factory, the physical act of locking
and unlocking it, arms and disarms as well.

What you would do here to disarm it
would be to send a single positive pulse
to the POWER UNLOCK wire
(red/blk or green |+|driver door harness in
the kick panel, by remote to disarm and drive.

Meaning, you will need to either buy a VW remote
control for around 180.00 or, put in an
aftermarket keyless entry, and trick they're
into disabling/unlocking. Can be done
but will still cost about 125.00 with labor.

Can't think of any other way around it.
