Car Alarms: Replacing ignition lock cylinder on 91 Camaro RS, camaro enthusiast, locksmart

Question
I recently purchased an aftermarket ignition lock cylinder(Locksmart)with the wire for the VAT system from Autozone. Upon inspection of the part I noticed no instructions or any other paper work. My concern is how to program the key to match my car or vise versa, if thats even possible. Autozone had no answers except that the key in the cylinder now, will only come out after the wire is plugged into the car. That may be how it's reprogrammed is his guess. Chevy dealership was no help and told me I would have to bring the car in. Will the 10 minute procedure work here? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Answer
I do not believe that leaving the key in the run position for 10 minutes will work with the older VATS system.  I believe it only works on the passlock system.  I wish I could offer more assistance but my knowledge is limited to how to bypass the VATS for remote starting, or permanently.  If you still have the old key for the vehicle, bypassing the VATS is a very simple process.  You just read the resistance across the pellet in your old key, pick up a resistor that matches that value and solder it across the VATS wires to the VATS module leaving the wires that run to the key cylinder disconnected.

As far as the wiring for the key release solenoid, I thought that in the 91 vehicles was a mechanical function, not electro-mechanical.  In other words, to my knowledge there is no electronic device that prevents the key from releasing while the transmission is in gear but a mechanical device instead.

I am by no means an expert when it comes to the questions you have so please take what is stated here as a suggestion.  I would suggest that you post this question to a Camaro enthusiast forum like:

An enthusiast there may be able to offer you a better answer.
