Car Alarms: 1999 toyota camry anti-theft alarm, remote keyless entry, toyota camry

Question
QUESTION: I'm having trouble with my anti-theft alarm in my 1999 toyota camry.  I couldn't get it to turn off.  I unlocked the driver's side door with my key, I opened the door and the alarm went off.  I haven't used the remote door opener which also has an alarm shut off botton on it in at least two years.  I don't know how I tripped the alarm.  I replace the battery in the remote and finally was able to reset the alarm and start my car.  A friend says it's a wiring problem.  Our mechanic says we can't disconnect it because it will shut down the whole car.  What do you think went wrong?  I am totally convinced my car will never be stolen because the alarm does work in shutting down the car.  I'd like to know if the alarm can be disconnected.
ANSWER: Dear Debbie,
I need to determine whether it's a factory alarm
issue or, if it's an aftermarket system you are
dealing with.

Is it: Headlights flashing, car horn honking
and a worded SECURITY" light in the dash flashing?
Or,
Is it: flashing parking lights,
an LED in the dash area, and a siren
"going off"?

Let me know more on this to better
advise you on a course of action.

QUESTION: Robert:
This is a factory installed system.  The horn honks, the lights flash at the same time.  Thanks for replying so quickly.

Answer
Ok, here's the trouble. The factory alarm
works when the door is locked or unlocked.
Either by remote, or with the key,

The key is put in the drivers door, turn it to the left
first, then to the right to disarm it.

If no joy, then you need to call the local Toyota
shop for repair. There is no simple way to
shut it off like in some cars. You can also add
a remote keyless entry to do it, but let's
see if you can get it shut off first.
