-----Question-----
hi i have a viper 791 remote start alarm system.  the problem i have is that the cars only starts with the remote start but wont start with the key. what could it be?
-----Answer-----
There are a couple of things that could cause this, I would look into the possibility of the alarm being armed, which could cause this starter to be disabled via the key.

The connection to the relay that controls the starter kill may have come loose.

The system may just be locked and need to be reset.

You do not mention what kind of vehicle it is, but if it has a transponder the bypass module may be activated at the same time you are trying to use the key which the vehicle would interpret as a the wrong key and stop it from starting.

The easiest way to reset the alarm would be to disconnect your battery for a few minutes then reconnect, but be sure to make a quick reconnect attempt.  When you put the terminal back on the battery make it a smooth connection, meaning push the terminal back on and hold it against the post while tightening the bolt.  If this does not work I would try pulling the fuses that supply the brain of the alarm this would cut the supply to the starter kill relay.  Your vehicle does not have a transponder so the latter part of my earlier response would not apply.

First, the only way to know is to ask, so there is no need to apologize for asking questions.

The 791XV uses the XCR satellite, this has a key side and starter side for the wires to the starter kill.  The starter kill output is built in to the unit and it also serves as an anti-grind circuit.  You cut your vehicle's starter wire (black/white) put the green wire to the key side and the purple wire to the starter wire of the vehicle's wire.

I did not realize you were installing this unit, I thought it was already installed and you were having problems with the unit.
