Car Alarms: Viper Alarm System, python alarm system, hidden location

Question
I am not mechanically savvy and probably shouldn't have been messing with it in the first place, but where is the "brain" located? I'm assuming somewhere under the hood?  Sorry for my ignorance, but I do appreciate the fact that you answered my question!  Thanks

-----Question-----
I bought a 98 Ford Ranger with a Python alarm system. I don't have the users manual and after cleaning my battery in which I disconnected the terminals the alarm won't arm anymore.  Any thoughts?
-----Answer-----
It is possible that when you were reconnecting the battery the voltage spiked.  The alarm system may have locked up from this spike.  I would recommend trying this:  Turn the ignition key to the on position, disconnect the negative terminal, wait one minute, then reconnect the terminal trying to ensure the contact between the post and terminal is not lost while tightening the terminal.

If you post the exact model of your alarm I will see what I can do about finding the manual for your system in electronic form.  This number would be on the brain of the system itself, not on the remote.

Answer
No need to apologize, you do not know unless you ask.

The "brain" of the system is probably located under the driver's side dash of your vehicle.  If you take down the panel that is directly under the steering column this will expose the ignition key's wiring harness.  This is where the alarm system would be tapped in.  Follow this harness down until you see the harness that was added for the alarm, follow that harness to the brain of the alarm.  The brain will have several harnesses coming from it, going in multiple directions.  One to the ignition harness, one to the siren, one to an impact sensor, one to the parking light circuit, one to the door trigger of the vehicle.  It is a small black plastic box and will have "Python" on it.  It is possible that the alarm was installed in a hidden location but following the wire back from the ignition harness will show where it is.

You may be able to just look under the dash and find the brain, although it should be mounted up out of plain sight I have seen MANY installations where the brain is easy to spot.
