Car Alarms: Car alarm, pontiac grand am, unfortunate truth

Question
I have an after market car alarm installed on my 1999 Pontiac Grand Am GT. The system was installed before I purchased the car second hand. The problem is that my horn beeps when the car is left on in park. It only beeps once, but it is annoying at times. I thought there was something wrong with the alarm, so I brought it to a local installer. He informed me that the system is working fine and the horn has nothing to do with the alarm system. I then brought the car to the dealer. He informed me that the alarm was malfunctioning and to have it removed or I may not be able to get into my car if it completely malfunctions. I have no idea what to do.

Answer
OK, first dealerships are not always aware of how an aftermarket piece operates.  The unfortunate truth is a dealership will look at a car and see it has an after market device and blame the after market device without properly diagnosing the actual problem first.

This is not to say that your alarm is not causing an issue, just stating experience.

When you say your horn is beeping, is it the horn or a siren? Is it just beeping once or does it sound like you set off the alarm?  If it is a siren that is going off, then there is definitely something up with the alarm and it should be looked at.  Depending on the local shops in your area, there may be a place you can take it to and pay an hourly rate to have it looked at.  Just find an authorized dealer for your make of alarm and give them a call.  Most alarm problems can be fixed in under an hour.
