Car Alarms: 2002 malibu, passlock ii, key cylinder

Question
passlock is engaging.  don't understand why. took it to the mechanic. he said once engaged we can turn the key and wait ten minutes.  but its continuing to happen now on a regular basis. what might be happening to cause this?  thanks

Answer
Your car has what is known as passlock II.  This system is similar to the older GM anti-theft system known as VATS, with VATS there was a resistor pellet in the key that if the ECM did not see the proper resistance when starting, it would not allow the vehicle to start.  On the newer passlock systems this has been moved into the key cylinder itself.

You have two options in my opinion, the first is to have the switch replaced.  This can be costly but would retain the integrity of the factory anti-theft system.

The second would be to bypass the passlock all together.  Although this would permanently bypass the antitheft system, it would prevent the problems you are having now.  If you think this is the way you want to go, post your email address and I will send you a diagram that will show how to accomplish this.
