Car Alarms: Alarm goes off when Pontiac Firebird is locked by autocop., will need adobe acrobat reader, adobe acrobat reader

Question
By auto-cop I meant the small gadget that is used for keyless entry/locking of the car. What would you call this?

Thanks for explaining how to disable the alarm systems. Clearly the keyless entry/locking system is not working properly. Is it possible that the battery is low for this gadget?

Thanks,
Manju.

-----Question-----
Hi, my boyfriend has pontiac firebird, year 2000.

Problem: After locking the car using the auto-cop, the car alarm goes off after a few seconds. The car doors do lock.

So then we tried locking the doors with the button near the drivers seat arm rest. After closing the door and waiting a couple of seconds the alarm went off. The car doors were locked.
Finally he just sat inside the car, opened the hatchback, locked the door with the button on the arm rest, and then crawled out from the back.
(We didn't have the key that opens/locks the door at the time.)

The other option was to leave the car unlocked.

What do you think the problem is, how can it be fixed.
Thanks!
Manju.

I am not sure what an 'auto-cop' is.  If it is the factory alarm system that is going off, you can permanently disable it by following the instructions listed in this pdf document.

http://www.the12volt.com/uploads/files/1051 GM Alarm disable.pdf

You will need adobe acrobat reader to view that file.

If it is an aftermarket system that is sounding, this is a different situation.  You would want to put the system in valet mode.  With most systems there is a toggle switch mounted in the vehicle some where.  Turn your ignition switch to on, and hit this switch.  This will disable the security features of the system, until repairs can be made.

Hope this helps.

Answer
When the alarm is triggered, does it honk the horn or does it sound a siren?

If it honks a horn then follow the GM directions in the previous link.

If it sounds a siren then either follow the directions at the bottom of the previous question or take down the dash plate under the steering column.  There is a harness that runs from the key switch to the vehicle.  In that harness is where the connections for the after market system will be.  There should be fuses inline from the factory harness to the after market system.  Pull these fuses and it should disable the auto-cop until you have time to get it repaired.
