Car Alarms: Immobiliser Troubles?, vw golf gti, starter wire

Hi.

I'm trying to diagnose a problem with my 1996 VW Golf GTI (engine code ADY). There seems to be a problem with the ignition and the car won't start. When the alarm/immob is armed, the starter won't turn, which is fine. When I hit the key-fob to disarm the alarm/immob, there's a click, and the starter will crank the engine when I turn the key. That's the way it normally works. I'm wondering if the alarm/immob also switches off the ignition circuit and that there may be a fault with this side of things? I've done the usual and changed the ignition coil, engine speed sensor etc. timing is all fine and it's just down to either this or the ECU now. Is there any way to disable the alarm? It's a GT136TU from Getronic, or GT Auto Alarm.

Thanks

J.

Hmmm, interesting. if this is an aftermarket alarm,
it's very possible the relay on the starter wire is
either bad, or is getting a negative pulse from the
alarm, and will not disengage. Please confirm this
was fitted after the factory and I may have a fix.

Hi, thanks for the rapid response, yes, it's aftermarket but not fitted by me. The starter motor does turn when the alarm is disarmed. I just need to find a way to get the ignition circuit re-enabled if that is indeed the fault.

Thanks again.

Answer
Allright. If the starter is attempting the crank,
then it's unlikely to be a starter kill relay.
It may be on the injector wiring, which can
be another thing entirely. Try this, remove the alarm
from all harnesses. Try to start. If no joy,
locate the starter wire, and inspect any external
relays, cut out, and re attatch the starter wire ends.
Now try to start. If again, no joy, it is either the injectors,
or another issue with the ECM that is causing
the engine to crank, but not start.

Have a look, and let me know.
