Car Alarms: 1998 Mercury Mountaineer Add On Security Device, perimeter alarm, motor vehicle department

Question
I purchased a used 1998 Mercury Mountaineer SUV. In addition to the factory Perimeter Alarm and the PAT System it appears that the first owner had an add-on system installed. I have found a small push button mounted on the bottom apron of the dash board. I also find that the keypad does not work as described in the Owners Manual. Upon pressing any number on the keypad the alarm sounds and continues to do so until the complete five digit code is entered after which the alarm stops. Aside from this the keypad functions normally. Another difference is that when I set the perimeter alarm with the hand held transmitter verification is with a very loud double click, not the horn. Could you give your opinion:
1. What is the function of the small push button and how does it work?
2. Is the strange functioning of the keypad a product of the add-on syatem?
3. Does the keypad function this way to make it tamper proof?
4. Do you have any idea from the description who manufactured this system?
I would very much appreciate your help as the original owner is in another state and their motor vehicle department will not disclose his/her name and address. Thank you Bob

Answer
Could you give your opinion:
1. What is the function of the small push button and how does it work? <<<This is an aftermarket valet overide
button and in conjucntion with your ign. key, will
overide the aftermarket system, program new remotes,
and can be used to change certain features.

2. Is the strange functioning of the keypad a product of the add-on syatem? <<<if the keypad you are reffering
to is inside the vehicle, then yes, this is an aftermarket
device, and should be removed if you do not know
the code. If the keypad is on the drivers side door,
then this is the OEM keyless portal on high end
ford/lincolns and would need Ford to help reset,
re program that. I can't assist there.

3. Does the keypad function this way to make it tamper proof? <<<<<yes it is an add on immobilizer if
it's the aftermarket system inside. But this
would be redundent here, since this also is
equiped with the PATS system. If it is inside,
I say remove this one, and the other alarm system
with the siren, LED and keyless entry,
and replace it with one you know about from
the begining.

If it's the one outside, it
controls the unlocking and disarming af the factory
systems. Again a Ford/Lincoln reset issue.

4. Do you have any idea from the description who manufactured this system? <<<hard to say, and
there in lies the point of removing it if infact
it is the one inside (aftermarket). These are
released in series, and can not be re tought, or
re programed. It needs to be re moved.

I would very much appreciate your help as the original owner is in another state and their motor vehicle department will not disclose his/her name and address. Thank you Bob<<<I understand, but please
understand that there are sooooo many
veriables and without my being there to
inspect what we have there, it's
best guess here from experience that removing
the old aftermarket in favor of one you
"get" will make for a more reliable,
safer experience.
