My 1997 Ford Explorer factory alarm goes off on its own.  No matter where it is or when, if I arm the system, it goes off.  Any ideas?
Answer -
Hi Rick,
I am having a difficult time with this one since what I
know about this vehicle is that the "factory" alarm arms
when you lock the doors, and disarms when you lock them.
The thing here is, I am more inclined to think you have
an aftermarket system here. Can you tell me if it's
a siren or the car horn going off? Do the headlights
blink or, is it the side "parking lights"? Is there
a blinking LED in the dash area, or not?

Please let me know, and we can go from
a more informed angle here.

WHEN ALARM IS ACTIVATED, HEADLIGHTS & BRAKELIGHTS FLASH WITH HORN AND I BELIEVE WHEN ARMED A LED LIGHT IN DASH.

Answer
Hmmm, that's still vague. The LED throws me off
there. And using a car's horn is not used often in aftermarket systems.

This would then possible be an issue
with factory system. You can disable it for good
by locating the dk. green/purple |-| wire
in the driver's kick panel and ground it to the
chassis. If this does not solve the issues you are
having, then it is an aftermarket system and
you will need to go in and out of overide (reset)
the alarm. That procedure would depend on the system
you have. You would need to fish out the brain of the
alarm to know what you have.

But try the first option and see if it
stops the problems.

Good luck.
