Car Stereos: 2004 Tahoe radio sound bad, 2004 chevrolet tahoe, bose amp

Question
QUESTION: I bought a used 2004 Chevrolet Tahoe. The radio problem is that the right speakers work and the left you can barely hear. And, yes, I did check the balance and I have the balance in the center. So I don't know if that channel is blown or what.
Has anyone heard of this problem, with the right or passenger side speakers working, and not the left or driver's side not working.

ANSWER: Hi Tom,

I just had a question very much like this.  There are all sorts of things that can cause that.

The first thing to do is to remove the stereo and test the impedance of the wires going to the speakers (you can usually find colour diagrams online to know which wires go where).

Test to make sure you're seeing 4ohms of resistance to each speaker.  If it's less, you have a short, if it's more, you have a broken/bad connection.  If it is 4, look into replacing the head unit itself.

(Nearly 4 is OK; ~3.8-4.2ish are fine.)

QUESTION: Checked Speakers and wiring. I believe the proble is in the radio or amp. Does the 2004 Tahoe with a bench front seat have an amp. If so where is it located.

Answer
Hi Tom,

The bench front seat isn't what decides whether you have an amp or not -- it's whether you have the Bose system or not.  The system should give you some indication, whether it be a silk screen on the deck, written on the grilles for the speakers, or on the display when you turn it on.

If your vehicle shows no indication of it, then you don't have it.

If you do, the amplifier is under the centre console.  You should be able to see it if you pull out the cup holders.  It looks like this:
