Car Stereos: How to wire an Amp to aftermarket system, worst case scenario, gmc envoy

Question
Good Morning Justin,
You help me out so much the last time that I thought I would bring this one to you.
This is on my 2005 GMC Envoy (w/o Bose or on-star).
I have my new HU installed (with the recommended harness to retain door chimes)and it was working GREAT until I installed my new 5-channel Fosegate Amp. I think I know where I screwed up, but really wanted to ask an expert. I wired the speaker outs from the amp to the harness coming out of the new HU. The 2 front speakers are going into the chime box (of the new harness) and I think this might be my mistake, the rear speakers go straight into the harness going out to the rear speakers. The amp does turn on but it is in the protected mode and according to the troubleshooting guide it is more than like because the impedance is too low. Is this because I went through that chime box or do I really have something screwed up? ANY help will be GREATLY appreciated!

Thank you in advance for your help
Curtis

Answer
Hi Curtis,

It sounds by your descriptions you've got some wiring backwards.

If you put in an aftermarket amp to run your regular speakers and the door chime adapter you bought doesn't have its own speaker to do the chiming for you, you'll have to create a loop where the sound output from the amp goes into the speaker input on the unit, and then out to the speaker.  If you just hook it up to the harness going into the deck, your amp and your harness will both be trying to send sound signal, and in a worst case scenario, one of them will eventually fry.  Fortunately, your amp has caught on something's wrong, and shut down to protect itself.

The speaker outputs from the amp need to go either straight to the speakers themselves, or into the other side of the harness, and be completely disconnected from the deck itself.
