Car Stereos: 2002 Jeep Liberty Limited Stereo replacement, phillips screw, wiring speakers

Question
My whole left side of my 2002 Jeep Liberty Limited Stero is out for the most part.  Sometimes the sound does "kick in" and then goes out again.

So, I deal with it and because of it, I believe I've blown the right door speaker.

I would like to change out the whole stereo (assuming that the intermittent sound is coming from the stereo itself.  Or, from other questions I've learned that there is an amp in the door itself?????).

But, what should I be concerned about and most importantly, how do I take off the silver dash bracket that surrounds the stereo and heating/ac controls.  Thanks.

Answer
Hi Tom,

There's nothing special in your truck regarding wiring.  Speakers going out can be a lot of things -- it could be a bad connection at the speaker, or the deck itself.  Only testing will tell you that for sure.

There are no amps in the doors, and you can remove the door panels and fiddle with the speaker connectors to see if it affects when they work or not.

As for the plastic around the stereo, remove your ashtray/compartment at the bottom of the hvac panel, and there should be one phillips screw behind it.  Remove that screw, and then gently remove the entire panel,  It's clipped in place.

Good luck,
Justin
