Car Stereos: Infinity Speakers, infinity speakers, crossover settings

Question
QUESTION: I have 2003 Jeep Liberty, with Infinity speakers.I replaced front speakers wit Alpine SPS-600C speakers including tweeters.I was told since the front door speakers had there own Amps on the back of the speakers, they would have to be switched to new speakers? Will this work?It was done but the bass is no where near what it was?Any ideas or was I taken??

ANSWER: Hi Ray,

The factory Infinity amplifiers in the Liberty have separate output channels for the door woofer and dash tweeter.  However, when you're installing replacement component speakers, you don't necessarily want to connect the after-market woofer and tweeter to the same factory outputs.  The built-in crossover settings in the Infinity amplifier don't usually match the after-market speakers' preferred crossover points.  It's a much better idea to bypass the Infinity amplifiers, use the crossovers that came with the after-market speakers, and run them from the full-range output coming from the head unit.  The Liberty's head unit is capable of running speakers on its own, without the factory amplifiers, but you might lose a bit of power.

Another potential problem is that the mounting hole in the door is an odd shape, and may not match the new speaker.  If there's a significant gap at the edge of the speaker, this can affect the bass output. It's important, when mounting the speaker, to seal the opening as completely as possible; this might require fabricating a bracket or filler plate.

Hope this helps!

QUESTION: Thank you so much Brian,no one seemed to have a idea on what I was asking lol.So your saying by pass the amplifiers on the front door speakers(they are on the back of speakers) and run right to head unit? Also with this Infinty system if I should upgrade to another amp should it be 2 or 4 channel?I have the Alpine SPS-600C in the front with tweeters in dash, was thinking about moving them to back doors and getting 75 to 100 watt amp and putting new Infinity speakers in front? Then everything would be going threw the New amp?Sound right or No?...Just wanted the sound back to where in was? Thanks again Brian

Answer
Hi Ray,

Sorry about the long delay in answering your follow-up.

Yes, I think your best option is to bypass the factory amps, whether you use an after-market amplifier to run your new speakers or just connect them to the head unit.

Personally, I don't think I'd use a set of component speakers like the SPS-600C in the rear doors.  They'd be wasted there, unless you're trying to improve the sound for your rear seat passengers; and you'd need to do some custom work to mount the tweeter in the rear.  If you decide to upgrade to an after-market amp, I'd pick a 4-channel model and use it to drive all the speakers.

Hope this helps!
