Car Stereos: 6x9 wiring, load impedance, toyota celica

Question
Hi, just a simple question for you here (i know zero about speakers and systems). I have a Toyota Celica which has front and rear speakers as standard, and i have a pair of 6x9 speakers that i want to install into my parcel shelf. All i want to know is this: is it necessary for me to faff about running the wires through my car (under carpets and all that) in order to connect them to the head unit, or can i just somehow run them off the existing rear speakers?
Thanks in advance, Carl.

Answer
Hi Carl,

Sorry about the extreme delay in responding to your question.

If I'm understanding your question properly, you're planning to add an additional pair of speakers to your system, rather than replacing the existing rear speakers with the new set.

As far as the wiring goes, there's no need to route new wiring up to the head unit; you can certainly connect to the existing rear speaker wiring.  However, no matter how it's wired, you'll still end up with two pairs of speakers connected to a single set of speaker outputs from the head unit.  This is not recommended, because it reduces the impedance of the speaker system, which can cause the head unit to overheat and may damage it.

It's possible to wire the speakers in series, which would raise the load impedance and reduce the strain on the head unit's amplifier.  However, the drawback is that the head unit's total power output would be reduced, then divided between both sets of speakers.

All in all, if you want to add another pair of speakers to your system, the best way to do it is to install a 2-channel amplifier to power them.

On the other hand, if you're installing new speakers to replace the stock set, rather than supplement them, then you can just disconnect the factory wires from the old speakers and connect them to the new one.

Hope this helps!
