Car Stereos: sub blown?, dual voice coil, amp fuse

Question
i have 2 12" L5s, was pushing them with a-baun 1801Q and
upgraded to a ppi pc2600.2. my fuse under the hood(80w)
keeps blowing so i havent been playing it loud but now im
not getting anything from the subs. i pulled one and i cant
see any physical damage and no smell but when i put a AA
battery to the terminals i get nothing. i dont see how i
could have blown the subs... i hooked another sub to the amp
and it worked so i know im getting a sig. what else can i do
tocheck the subs short of a meter or taking them to a shop?

Answer
Hi Mac,

Sorry about the long delay in answering this question.  Usually, if I'm testing a sub I'll use a multimeter, but it sounds like you've done enough to verify that you have a blown sub--if you substitute another sub, and it works, that's a pretty good indicator that the first sub is defective.  I couldn't tell you why the L5's may have blown on either of your amps, unless you were only using a single voice coil instead of wiring both voice coils on the subs.  Using a single voice coil of a dual voice coil sub will reduce the power handling.  The fact that your 80-amp fuse kept blowing might have been related to the subs as well--a shorted voice coil will put more strain on the amplifier, often resulting in blown fuses.

Hope this helps!
