Car Stereos: Jeep Grand Cherokee Converter, jeep grand cherokee, rear cargo area

Question
I have a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee and I am trying to wire a sub and amp into my stock HU. I have a IEC Auloc converter and do not know how to wire it into my car to get it to work. I tried one way and it did not work for me.  If you could help that would be great.

Answer
Hi Matt,

Connecting the line output converter in your Grand Cherokee might be tricky, because some of these vehicles are equipped with a data-controlled factory amplifier.  If your vehicle has the amp, then you won't be able to connect the converter at back of the head unit; you'll need to tap into the speaker wires between the speakers and the amplifier.

If you're not sure, you can check the wires in the radio plug.  If your vehicle has the factory amp, there should be four wires in a row near one end of the plug:  green/blue, green/violet, gray/blue, and gray/tan.  If these wires are in a row by themselves, with no wires in the row next to them, then you'll need to find the factory amp and make your connections there.  However, if there are four other wires--green, green/brown, gray, and gray/brown--in the row adjacent to the first four wires, then there's no factory amp and you can connect the line output converter at the factory radio harness.

If there's no factory amp, then the wires I listed are the speaker wires.  I'd suggest tapping into the front speaker wires: green (+) and green/brown (-) for the left speaker, and gray (+) and gray/brown (-) for the right speaker.

If you do have a factory amp, it should be located under the side panel, on the driver's side of the rear cargo area.  The colors you need are gray/violet (+) and gray/green (-) for the left speaker, and green/violet (+) and green/yellow (-) for the right speaker.

Hope this helps!
