Car Stereos: hooking jbl changer to jvc car stereo, factory radio, factory cd

Question
I have a 1983 town car with a 2 yr old jvc stereo with connections for bluetooth, satellite radio and external disc changer. In the trunk is the original factory installed jbl 6-disc changer. Jvc has a proprietary cable plug. Is there any way to hook up the jbl changer to the jvc stereo? I'm looking for some kind of converter plug but I am capable of just rewiring a connection if I have the pin-outs, but not anxious to.

Answer
Hi Paul,

I've seen adapters that are designed to let you use an after-market CD changer with a factory radio, but I've never seen one that lets you keep a factory CD changer working with an after-market head unit.  It's not just a matter of adapting the pin-out; the control interface has to match between the two components.  It's unlikely that the factory CD changer would recognize the commands from the head unit, even if you matched up the wiring.

I'm wondering if the vehicle's model year was a typo?  Given that the CD format was invented in 1982, I'm certain that there wasn't a 6-disk CD changer available as original equipment in the 1983 Town Car.  If the model year is correct, then the CD changer must have been added later.

Sorry I can't be more helpful!
