Car Stereos: Car accessory switch, using a digital multimeter, windshield wipers

Question
QUESTION: I have a 2001 Pontiac grand prix gt and I was going to hook up a switch
that when the keys are not in the ignition, the accessories turn on. I Hooke
it up to the orange wire and the power but the orange is the A/C. Which
wire is the accessory wire or what do I need to do?  Thank you

ANSWER: Hi Jared,

In a 2001 Grand Prix, the true accessory wire at the key switch is the dark brown wire.  This should power the radio circuit, windshield wipers, and possibly the power windows as well.  Make sure you use a heavy-duty switch.

Hope this helps!

QUESTION: I tried hooking it up and nothing came on such as the radio or the windows.  I had the switch flipped and everything.  Is there something that I am missing?

Answer
Hi Jared,

I apologize for the delay in answering your follow-up question.

Sorry you're having trouble getting this to work.  What are you using for the power source for your switch?  Usually there are two main power wires that supply voltage to the ignition switch; one's red, and the other red with a white stripe.  Either of these should work to supply power for your accessory switch.

You can verify that you're powering the correct accessory power wire, using a digital multimeter.  The thick brown wire is the only output at the ignition switch that should be showing voltage when you turn the key backwards to the "accessory" position.  If the wire you're using doesn't show voltage when the key is turned back, it's not the right wire.  Any vehicle accessory that works when you turn the key back, should also work if you power the wire through a separate switch.

Hope this helps!
